Slavery in Aviation in Mombasa? BenAir Engineering Limited Exploiting Employees

A leading Mombasa based aviation maintenance company, BenAir Engineering Limited is being accused by labour unions in Kenya of ruthlessly exploiting its employees. The Company owns the Mombasa Air Services and is owned by the Cleave family, based in Mombasa. Captain John Cleave is the Chairman of the aircraft maintenance company and its airline sister company, MAS. According to reliable information received on this blog, employees including maintenance technicians earn as low as Ksh.5000($60) per month, workers are said to be overworked to meet increasing demand for scheduled flights due to high tourist numbers with little or no extra pay. All workers are also not unionized, according to a reliable source. The source told us that the work conditions at BenAir Engineering Limited are akin to slavery, with the company capitalizing on the healthy tourist numbers at the Coast without proper compensation for its employees.
